“Advocating for Agriculture: Closing the consumer-producer divide”

Hilton Belfast Templepatrick Golf & Country Club
Paradise Walk, Castle Upton Estate, Templepatrick BT39 0DD
There can be sometime a giant gap of understanding between agricultural producers and consumers and modern agriculture is not what consumers believe or what they want to believe. Most people think family farms are small, independent, diversified, and producing food for their local area but agriculture is now a highly technical, scientific, and capital intensive business and it requires farm operators to be proficient in a wide variety of highly specialized areas.
Setting aside the issues of production techniques, biotechnology, animal welfare, and the general lack of understanding of how and where their food is produced.   The gap over the image and expectations of the food production system is at the heart of the disconnect between producers and consumers.
While some call for a return to the good old days, the reality is we cannot meet our current food needs, let alone future food demand, with 1960s technology. Consumers today demand a wide variety of sophisticated food products with convenience, low cost, and guaranteed safety. As part of our conversation about agriculture, This NIIAS annual conference will allow us a chance to stress to consumers, producers and public officials that the consumer-producer divide has changed.
Just as the corner store has become the supermarket, the family farm has become a family business, and let us show you that it is NOT a bad thing.

Guest speakers will include  Brian Rushe – Dairy Farmer, Kildare and 2015 Nuffield Scholar and Joe McDonald - Corporate Affairs Manager, ASDA along with others

The event has been kindly sponsored by Devenish Nutrition  and ASDA`

A finger buffet will be served from 6.30pm with speakers commencing at 7pm, followed by a question and answer session.  The event is open to NIIAS Members and Non-Members.  The cost for Members is £20, Non-Members £25 and Students £10.
